2020 has arrived, ready or not! What are your habits when starting a new year? Do you choose a word that will guide you all year long? Last year my word was "intention" and I used it to remind me to make intentional choices, to be intentional in my relationships and my business. Do you make resolutions? This year I will....fill in the blank here. I tend not to make resolutions because historically my follow through is sketchy. Or do you do nothing, choosing to see the new year as a continuation of the previous one?
I think there is something inside of us that views a new year or a new decade, as a chance to take inventory of where we've been, where we are now, and dream of all the possibilities of what can be in the future. By the same token, we don't magically change into a new person at the turn of the calendar, with new dreams, a different vision or greater clarity. There's a duality to a new year- of taking stock of lessons learned, failures and victories, and also casting a vision for where we want to go, what we want to change, or even rejoicing in what we're satisfied with now.
I chose this year to write out my priorities so I can see them, and be reminded of their importance daily, so I follow through. They are simple, but not always easy. I'm in my fifties now, with grown children who don't live with me, or even in my state. While I miss them, I've had this slow realization that I love the freedom I have at this stage of life to choose what I want each day to look like. I'm not tied to caring for children any longer and it affords me the luxury of creating space for what I want to do. By the same token, I am often jolted by the birthday numbers, and resist the urge to panic about how much life has passed and how much more I want to do. This year I am practicing the art of enjoying where I am, and being grateful, instead of fearing getting older. There are trips I want to take, a business I want to grow- so many things- so this year I have determined to adventure more and take the risks that make sense. Rounding out my priorities is the daily habit of wellness. Being active, fit, eating well, reading, learning-these are all practices I want to cultivate each day, because I feel better, my mind is sharper, and my mood is better when I do!
